Shutters on the Beach

"The key to a great hotel is the people. Take care of your guests and your staff - they will take care of you, and you will have great hotels." - Burt Slatkin

That statement has been the mantra for Thomas and Edward Slatkin, long before their real estate investment company was established in the mid 80's.

When the Slatkins (third generation hoteliers) and their partners, acquired the real estate at One Pico Blvd in Santa Monica in 1991, they had ambitious aspirations to develop the first and only luxury hotel on the sand in the Los Angeles area - a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1930s. They knew what they were about to do would bring jobs and vibrancy to a section of this beach community that had not been recognized in decades.

Their vision became a reality in 1993 with the opening of the now iconic, Shutters on the Beach, an enclave of simple elegance on the sand - simultaneously romantic and breezy yet the perfect setting for business meetings.

Shutters has 198 meticulously designed guest rooms and suites, all are the essence of a laid-back Southern California lifestyle, and yet reminiscent of the finest beach houses in the Hamptons or Cape Cod. Likewise, Coast Beach Cafe and Bar, 1 Pico Restaurant and ONE Spa, the spa at Shutters, immediately transport you out of the city and into a relaxed air of beach-induced calm with a staff that initiates the kind of hospitality that is always respectful of your needs.

"To design, build and operate a successful luxury hotel is thrilling. To transform a community forever is life-changing. We're so proud to be part of the world-class DNA that is Santa Monica."

- KLAUS MENNEKES, VP/MANAGING DIRECTOR

Hotel Casa del Mar

ETC Hotels commitment to the redevelopment of the Pico and Ocean Way area of Santa Monica continued in 1999, with a spectacular interior renovation and exterior restoration of Hotel Casa del Mar, Shutters' neighboring historic landmark building.

Originally built in 1926 as the exclusively private Club Casa del Mar, this grand yet welcoming Mediterranean villa has evolved into the perfect compliment to Shutters with its grand lobby and alluring design - with no membership required this time around. With 129 casually elegant guest rooms and suites, (including three magnificent two-story penthouses), the Sea Wellness Spa and the best seafood restaurant on the Westside, Catch - Hotel Casa del Mar has become the place to be seen, especially at sunset. The hotel's breath-taking lobby and bar area, known as Terrazza beckons you to spend the afternoon transfixed by the endless view of the Pacific Ocean through panoramic floor - to - ceiling windows.

Together, Shutters on the Beach and Hotel Casa del Mar have enhanced the landscape of Santa Monica.
